"Problems of the N-E people can only be solved through a democratic course"

(Augst 14, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Douglas Devananda, Minister of Social Services and Social welfare and the Secretary General of Eelam People’s Democratic Party at a funcion held for celebration of the “Golden Jubilee” of the Jaffna Nurses Training School where he participated as the Chief Guest of Honour stated that the problems faced by North-East Tamil people could only be solved through a democratic course of action and not by resorting to an armed struggle.

The Minister speaking further said that the Tamil people are stuck in problems like a piece of cloth entangled in a bush of thorns and that they should be carefully disentangled from the mess. Therefore it’s of necessity to maintain a healthy relationship with the central Government in order for all the problems to be settled amicably and to get the Central Government’s help for proceeding with the developmental activities of the North and also it’s important to bear in mind that no development work could be done in the absence of assistance from the Central Government.

His people have now realized the truth and have begun to march with him. However some politicians with vested interest are trying to tarnish their image for their political mileage, the Minister said. The Minister also urged those who had gathered at the celebration to be cautions of such individuals and come forward to join hands with him for promotion of social and economical development of they land.
