The Statement by Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka

We, 'Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka', wish to bring to your attention this disturbing video clip. We are not in a position to disclose the way we received it, but we can say that the video was captured during the month of January in 2009.

The Sri Lankan government justifies the internment of approximately 280,000 Tamil people, for over three months now, on the basis that they are 'screening' for LTTE cadres. These camps still remain out of bounds for independent media and human rights observers. Apart from these known camps, it is widely believed that there are over 10,000 Tamils are held in undisclosed locations. Further, as a recent BBC report reveals the interned Tamils have to regularly experience the trauma of the appearance of the 'dolphin vans' in the camps – as these whisk away people – who then disappear.

The video-clip was taken during the period of the war, when international and independent local media were prevented by the Sri Lankan government from covering the conflict zone. This videoclip shows the reality of the behaviour of the government forces during the war which the government called a ‘humanitarian operation’ to rescue the Tamils. All reports, like that of the BBC above, indicate that there is no reason to believe that there is a change in the behaviour of the armed forces.

For the benefit of those who cannot understand Sinhala – we offer you some of our initial observations. From the casual nature of the conversations and from the fact that it is taking place in an open area and in broad daylight - it can be surmised that these are not extraordinary acts by rogue elements carried out without the permission from the top leadership. The soldiers egging each other on, the insulting jokes and the laughter show that there is a consensus that these cold blooded killings should take place.

Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka (JDS) is an action group of journalists, writers, artists and human rights defenders in exile who are campaigning for democracy, human rights and media freedom in Sri Lanka.

I have watched several times this video which was said to have been given to the the notorious Channel 4 by "Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka", .
I believe that the following is irrefutable evidence to prove that it is a fake video that has been produced employing actors:

At two places, the video shows posterior views of a man seated on the ground with his hands tied behind his back and his body and head erect. Standing behind him is a man (supposed to be a soldier) with a gun aimed at the seated man's head.

The important thing to note here is that the man can be seated in that position only as long he is alive. The moment he dies he has to fall either forward or sideways, because the center of the brain which controls his balance ceases to function. As anyone who has seen an actual execution by a firing squad (or a video of it) would have observed, even if the body were kept erect by some means, such as by tying to a pole, the head will not stay erect after the the man is executed. It slumps sideways or forwards.
Does this happen in the two instances showing 'executions' in this video?
No. In both instances you hear a firing of a gun, but the man who is supposed to have been "executed" continues to sit in the same posture! He is still alive!! He is an actor!!!

Let's hope that "The Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka" will chose a more knowledgeable Director to produce their next video in their effort to discredit the government and the armed forces of Sri Lanka.

These are LTTE executions of Tamil civilians. At start of video (First five seconnds) first executor(in camourflage uniform) spoke Tamil "enna, enna da?" before kicking back of the head of executee. His face has features of Tamil ethnicity and Typical Tamil body movement. Second executor in green uniform also looks Tamil ethnicity and body movements. Third executee camourflage(probably same 1st executor) has Tamil features and body movement. Rest of the background voices are Sinhala with doubtful Sinhala accent and words. Another poor pro-LTTE propaganda to discredit Sri Lanka by Channel4.

Not sure what video you were watching. The first man falls to the right, looking from behind him. The second falls backwards and then stays upright for few seconds due to his hands tied behind him is stopping him falling. As the surface is wet he gradually the hands give into the muddy/wet earth and he falls.

You may argue after the shooting, from behind, he should have either gone forward or sideways due to the force of teh bullte being fired from the back. I am not sure where the weight of the body was when he was shot as it is difficult to tell from the video.

I am not saying this is a genuine video or fake, however the evidence suggest that its a real footage.

These things happen all over the world, unfortunately. I am sure and know LTTE did the same to SLA in the 90's.

One point to note though is that the answers coimng out of the SL high comm in UK and the SLA spokesperson contradict. If this never happend then one statement from the GOSL would have done. GOSL should stop kidding everyone. They are making all the Sinhalese look like fools too.

It would be fairly easy to find out who videoed this as I cannot imagine these sort of things would have happend with only a handful of soldiers around. The 2 guys on the video should know who videoed it when they see this video, assuming this is not fake!!

The video I watched is the one to which a link is provide in the news story above. I watched it once more after reading your comment. I did not see any of the "falling" you are speaking about. I stand by my comment.
As can be inferred from your last sentence, YOU ARE ASSUMING THAT THE VIDEO IS NOT A FAKE. It looks like you are finding arguments to justify that position!
