Biggest political scam in Galle: Muthuhettigama

(October 13, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Nishantha Muthuhettigama, who contested the recently concluded Southern Province Provincial Council election, said yesterday that he would lodge a complaint with the Inspector General of Police against the biggest political scam that took place in the history of Galle. “I will take it to court and I will also inform the Elections Commissioner,” said Muthuhettigama.

He said that he had been informed by elections and counting officers that he had received the highest number of preferential votes during the election. He had gone home in a procession and had a few hours sleep. When he got up, he had been informed that he had become third in the preferential vote count, said Muthuhettigama.

He thanked the people of the south for their blessings and tv channels Sirasa and Swarnavahini for the good publicity he had received both locally and abroad. He also thanked Ms. Anarkali Aakarsha and Sajin Vas Gunawardena who had helped him get such free publicity.

“Several people hindered our election campaign from the beginning to the end. I will take legal action against them. I didn't become the third, but the first. In a short while, I will prove whether I became the third of the first. According to the people's mandate, I should become the Chief Minister,” he said.

Muthuhettigama said that when he had inquired about the preferential votes, the Returning Officer had reprimanded him claiming that he was only carrying out orders received from the top.

“I will do everything possible to put those responsible behind bars and to obtain compensation,” he said.

He also pointed out that his brain was fine. “I am the only politician in the world who had to go through a medical test on court orders to prove that I am mentally fit. I hope to contact human rights organisations in Geneva and other countries with that medical certificate. I will take measures against those who insulted me. I hope to lodge a complaint against the theft of preferential votes that were cast for me,” said Muthuhettigama.

Meanwhile, the Galle District Returning Officer, Ashoka Jayasekera has lodged a complaint with the Galle police stating that Nishantha Muthuhettigama had threatened him.

He said that Mr. Muthuhettigama had threatened him saying that the preferential votes had not been counted properly.

Missing Piece of Southern Jigsaw

Mr Muthuhettigama, you said you felt like hugging Miss Anarkali_the_Attraction rather than hurling explosives - or expletives - at her.

If you took that step, the allegations that you level against at various quarters would not have arisen in this form.

Anyway, you played your role in dramatizing democracy in your own style and it is very ingnenious of you. People will not be bored about politics or democracy any more.

The drop in percentage of those who botherd to vote is due to monsoon factors, not due to so-called voter-apathy.

In post-independent Sri Lanka we habitually blame the politicians for spoiling the country and what is left of its cultrue, while conveniently ignoring the folks who elect them - the public.

Up until we acknowledge that fact and stop picking on politicians in isolation, likes of Mr Muthuhettigama, will be at the centre stage of Sri Lankan politics in the years to come, providing the nation with endless fireworks.

Change of public attitude has the potential to set off the cascading effect for cleaner ethical politics. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be in the pipeline yet.
