(October 20, Batticaloa/ Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) According to reliable sources, the government is getting ready to put up a show down in the east to overthrow the Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillaiyan.

The government is said to be unhappy over Pillaiyan’s reluctance to follow the line of the government and his public utterances critical of his inability to fulfil his role as Chief Minister due to heavy interference and non-cooperation from Colombo. His stance has angered the hard line politicians and the government officials.

Government’s several efforts to pressurise Pilliyan to give up his position as Chief Minister is said to be not giving any results. The Chief Ministers personal Secretary Dr Vigneswaran too is put under pressures to abandon Pillaiyan by not paying his salaries.

Information reaching through close circles in the Defence Ministry requesting anonymity confirms the government has decided to replace Pillaiyan with its most trusted Vinayagamoorthy Mulalitharan known as Karuna. The source said the government is prepared to execute a covert operation to remove the present Chief Minister.

As part of the campaign against Pillaiyan, Karuna has started to make public statements against the Chief Minister and in his latest attack, he demanded the Chief Minister’s immediate removal.

Karuna is said to be enjoying impunity from any investigations and legal process over some of the murders and disappearances allegedly undertaken by him since leaving the LTTE. Killing of Pillaiyan’s close ally Ragu in Colombo, assassination of the parliamentarian Joseph Pararajasingam, white van abduction and disappearance of businessman Sriskandarajah, disappearance of Prof. Sivasubramaniam Raveendranath and few other deaths under suspicious circumstances are blamed on Karuna.
