Independent structures made redundant, says Mangala

(October 09, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian)Not a single war hero can be hauled up before a war tribunal thanks to Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe, says Mangala Samaraweera, Convenor of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Mahajana Wing. He was addressing a media briefing in Colombo yesterday.

“That is the truth. In 1998, the Rome Statue was presented, Then on July 1, 2002, the International Criminal Court was established in the Hague, Netherlands. When they asked Sri Lanka to join in 2002, the then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe refused saying that we had independent structures in the country to deal with individuals that committed crimes.

“Now these institutions have been rendered redundant and the government is apprehensive about looking into crimes that are taking place. That is why we are paving the way for international intervention,” Mr. Samaraweera said.
