The Indian Minister for External Affairs speaks to Foreign Minister Bogollagama

(October 03, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Following the incident which occurred yesterday when a group of protesters forcibly entered and caused some damage to the Sri Lanka High Commission premises in New Delhi, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka and the High Commission in New Delhi made representations to the Indian Government.

The Indian External Affairs Ministry whereupon issued a statement thereafter ‘deeply regretting the unfortunate incident’ and subsequently later that evening, the Indian Minister for External Affairs S M Krishna initiated a telephone call to Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama and assured the Minister that immediate steps have been taken to strengthen security at the High Commission and that action will be taken against the perpetrators. He further stated that the incident is contrary to the cooperative relationship that exists between the two countries and certainly does not reflect the close and warm bi-lateral friendship that exists between India and Sri Lanka.

The Foreign Minister thanked Minister Krishna for the telephone call and stated that he appreciated the gesture. He further stated that he was confident that all necessary steps would be taken by the Indian government to deal with the matter.
