Opposition wants President to declare assets

(December 11, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) A spokesman for the Opposition’s common candidate General Sarath Fonseka today challenged President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family members to declare their assets before the January 26 presidential election.

General Fonseka will hand over the declaration of his assets along with his nomination papers and President Rajapaksa should do the same,” Co-spokesman for General Fonseka MP Mangala Samaraweera said.

He said that the President alone declaring his assets will not suffice but his family members should do the same.

Mr.Samaraweera also said that Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa is violating election laws by giving interviews in support of the Presidnet.”The Election Commissioner has said that government officials cannot engage in politics and the Defence Secretary is blatantly violating this directive. What action is the Election Commissioner taking against him,”Mr.Samaraweea queried at a press briefing.
