Those who are not corrupt in Govt. will join me: Gen. Fonseka

(December 21, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Those who are not corrupt in the government will join me to stop corruption and develop the country, said presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka yesterday.

“As a policy, I have always stood by my pledges and have carried them out. I will stop corruption and will develop this country,” the General said addressing the Matara district convention of the United National Front (UNF).

“I know that you all will also join me. I will create a country, where the youth will be able to live freely in a secure environment.

“There are individuals who cannot afford three meals a day. There are mothers who cannot afford to buy milk powder. There are children who cannot afford to buy school books. We will provide them with a bright future.

“The youth have been affected with unemployment. There are 60,000 unemployed graduates in the country. When they demand for jobs, they are assaulted using various means. We will stop such acts and provide them with jobs.

“We understand the problems faced by undergraduates as well. They don't have hostels. We will address their issues as well.

“I consider it my responsibility to uplift the standards of soldiers and their families. I am in debt as far as the Army is concerned. I will not be able to repay them. I will look into their welfare. I will also stop the interference of politics in the Police Department,” the General said.

Addressing the convention, Ranil Wickremasinghe, leader of the United National Party said that the General had been selected because they were convinced that the General would keep to his promise.

“He has been fielded as the common candidate of the people because he will abolish the executive presidency and will establish democracy.

“He is not a politician. He is a candidate. People are asking for a candidate to contest the presidential poll.

“Some are questioning as to whether General Fonseka would abolish the executive presidency. The answer is yes. He will do that.

“Former presidents, despite having a majority in the parliament, failed to abolish the executive presidency,” said Mr. Wickremasinghe.

Rauff Hakeem, leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) recalled the manner many SLMC parliamentarians were lured away.

“Of the 15 Muslim Deputy Ministers and Ministers in the government, apart from Minister Fowzie, 14 of them are from the Muslim Congress. They were taken away from us in stages.

“A few of them held a media briefing recently and one of them called himself a leader. He wanted to know how Rauff Hakeem could get 80 per cent of the Muslim votes for General Fonseka. They said that they could not accept that.

“Be happy that I have allocated 20 per cent of that to them. They won't even get that percentage now. I can assure you that. Recently I visited every nook and corner in the Trincomalee district. I visited Batticaloa and Ampara. On the 24th , General Fonseka and other leaders will be able to witness over 50,000 at a rally that will be held in Kalmunai,” said the SLCM leader Hakeem.

Mangala Samraweera, convenor of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (Mahajana) wing (SLFP-M) also addressed the convention and said that today corruption had turned out to be a major crisis than terrorism.

SF must be talking through his hind legs. This man several times in the past denounced that he ever will have political interests, and now had broken that promise. He took the mantle of Sri Lanka Army in an atmosphere when his predecessor Shantha Kottegoda was sent on retirement 2 years before he was due to retirement. How can he say that MR was unfair to him even having extended his term of office 4 times, elevating him to a general, and handing over the post of CDS? SF is no different to any other politician though he do not have political lineage. If people can parachute to the top of a political party for whatever reason, it is very unfair. SF expressed his dissatisfaction for appointment of senior members Wasantha Karannagoda to the position of CDS. On what ground did he do that. How did he confer the decorations on himself which was suspended due his unruly behavior in his junior army career? As a senior officer he has been no better. His joining the group who slandered him and tried to disrupt the war itself is a disqualification. The Marxist JVP who never believed in democracy the support extended to this man is suspicious at its best. Now that UNP leader has said he is going to be the executive prime minister in SF Presidency, I wonder what position JVP take for harping that it will never happen.

I wonder how a military leader of this calibre won the war or how the government won the war with an army commander of this IQ. This man is mislead even by people such as Ranil.

Yes harshamutu. I know why you are wondering how Sarath Fonseka finished terrorism. It is because you are an imbecile. Only people with brains could comprehend the General's achievements and ability.
