Vote for the real General, says Wijedasa Rajapaksa

(December 11, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Parliamentarian Wijedasa Rajapaksa yesterday called on all to vote for the real General who dedicated his life for 40 years for the country and guided the country to victory. Describing the General as a person who did not rob and and did not engage in corruption, Wijedasa said, “the General is being presented to the people as a clean candidate”.

He was addressing a meeting held at Sri Kotha, the United National Party headquarters by the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya to pledge support to the presidential candidate, General Sarath Fonseka.

“I heard the Leader of the house speaking yesterday. He said that the people of this country had a responsibility to choose the individual they wanted, whether it was the cardboard general of the real general.

“I didn't say it. I was the statement made by the Health Minister of the government. I am telling you all today, that when you vote, vote for the real General, who dedicated his life for the country for 40 years and who guided this country to victory.

“He was not power hungry. He did not rob and did not engage in corruption. He fulfilled his responsibilities for the country. We have presented you all with an individual who is clean,” said Wijedasa.

Karu Jayasuriya, Deputy Leader of the United National Party said that a soldier had been fielded to remove the country from its present state, who would give the people a bright future and who would uplift the living standards.

“He will create an atmosphere where there will be freedom of speech, independence to live and justice as well.

“Today, if you listen to the state media, there are attempts to tarnish his character. Back then, they said that he was the best soldier in the world. General Fonseka is and individual who would fulfill his pledges.

“When he was the Army Commander I knew him well. We all believed in his actions, his abilities and and we had trust in what he said.

“Without fielding a candidate from the UNP for the elections, we decided to field a common candidate from the Opposition who will unite the entire country, who is respected and who will stick to his word,” said Mr. Jayasuriya.

“The people of this country yearns for an honest leader with true commitment to establish good governance in the country,” said Parliamentarian Joseph Michael Perera addressing the meeting.

When one party got 51 per cent of the total votes cast, the other 49 per cent was not happy. That was the reality. To change that, for the first time in the history of Sri Lanka, General Sarath Fonseka had laid the foundation, said Joseph Michael.

“He is the trustee of the of the working class in the country and the trustee of all communities. Hence the General's participation at the presidential poll is a victory of the trade unions, the United National Party and all other political parties,” said parliamentarian Joseph Michael.

As many expatriate Tamils, I wish to see a change in leadership and hope for better future. Let’s all forget about the bitter past, and work together with all the communities in Sri Lanka to build a nation with peace, unity and equality.
I am a Sri Lankan first and a Tamil next; I wish to see the nation should do well in the future regardless of race or religion.
Stricter laws; for the past three decades one of the paradise in the world became a lawless land due to personal thoughts and ideas of individuals on both sides, We believe Mr. Fonseka would change that and make the country safer for all communities to live in peace and tranquility.
Equality; in Sri Lanka spoiled because of historical divide and conquers policies implemented by the colonial masters. Recent bitterness within the communities sparkled by some narrow minded politicians for their own victory and benefits.
So far, I haven’t seen a really racist common Sinhalese person in Colombo during my stay, that makes me to think about the fact Sinhalese and Tamils lived together for thousands of years in Sri Lanka what went wrong for the last thirty years? The answer is simple all done by some idiotic ideologies injected into common people’s mind by few so called leaders on both sides.
Unity; for many hardcore racists the word sounds like a bad language, but in reality unity and united will bring more goodness for every communities in one nation. Developed countries are becoming one nation regardless of race, religion or language for example European Union they are expanding united territories to be more successful in the future, I wish Mr. Fonseka would bring all the communities together and abolish inequalities and build a nation that every person proud to be first class Sri Lankan citizen than divided into race and religion.
Thanks for the opportunity

I do not know to whom Mr. Wijedasa is writing this article for. The honesty of SF is well known to brother officers who were in the Army for a long time. However, the utterances of SF almost cost us the war at some stage. Joining the hands of JVP and unpatriotic UNP he has shown his real colors. If he had any reputation to protect, he would have contested the presidential election on his own merit as a true patriot. The speeches SF gives since he became a presidential candidate is an about turn of his views while he was in the uniform.
