Norochchalai project under fire

(January 14, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) A future government under General Sarath Fonseka will undertake a full review of the controversial Norochchalai coal power project after local engineers warned of several shortcomings that could lead to adverse results, leader of the SLFP (M) group Mangala Samaraweera said.

He charged that the government had failed in its duty to make a full study of the project before going ahead with its implementation simply because certain persons were in a hurry to collect handsome commissions.

“Now engineers are warning that the entire project could fall flat on its face owing to several logistical issues such as transporting the coal from the high seas to locations on land.

The authorities intend to transport the coal from ships anchored at sea on to land by using an electrical belt. This could never be possible since the sea is not an even surface and this belt could go under water at any time”, he further added.

“The only other option is to build a harbour on the Norocchalai coast which is not practical”, Mr. Samaraweera further added.
