Polls chief castigates SLRC

(January 05, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Commissioner of Elections had written to the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) with regard to the live broadcast of a meeting attended by presidential candidate, president Mahinda Rajapaksa on the 2nd of this month.

It notes that it is a violation of Section 104 (B), which stipulates that from the 23rd of last month until the time that the election results are declared, no broadcast which is beneficial or detrimental to any particular candidate can be aired.

This is also a violation of the regulations stipulated by the Commissioner of Elections under Section 104 5 (A).

It goes on to say that by using the powers vested in him through Section 104 A, he will prevent the live coverage of any presidential candidates' election meetings and also prevent the use of the property of the Corporation for such activities.

… and writes to SLRC, SLBC chairmen on General's right to reply

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Elections has written to the Chairmen of the SLRC and SLBC requesting them to provide a reasonable amount of time for General Sarath Fonseka to respond to the allegations that are being levelled against him.

The letter has been sent based on the copy of a letter sent to the Chairmen of the SLRC and SLBC stating that these institutions are acting in violation of election laws and the Constitution to defame General Sarath Fonseka.
