General Sarath Fonseka assaulted and arrested by Military Police

(February 08, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Former Army Commander and Common Presidential Candidate General Sarath Fonseka was assaulted and dragged by his feet before being arrested by the Military Police a short while ago.

General Fonseka was at a discussion with SLMC Leader Rauf Hakeem, DPF Leader Mano Ganeshan, JVP Leader Somwansa Amerasinghe and Sunil Handunnetti when the Military Police had barged in and pushed the General on the floor.

Military Spokesperson Major General Prasad Samarasinghe had reportedly said that General Fonseka was arrested for committing military offences.

The government for the past few weeks has been accusing General Fonseka of allegedly attempting a coup against President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his government, threatening national security and the assassination of The Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge.
