Courage and a vision more important in politics: Upeksha

(April 01, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) In politics, what is more important is courage and a vision, says Upeksha Swarnamali, United National Front candidate for the Gampaha district.

She expressed this view while responding to a question by a journalist at a media briefing held in Colombo today with the participation of several other female representatives.

Experience could be gained by going through relevant material and with the assistance of seniors. If we stay focussed, we can gain experience with time.

“But what what matters is whether you are courageous and whether you have a vision,” said Upeksha.

Meanwhile, the United National Front Ratnapura district candidate Thalatha Atukorala said that women who made a great contribution to the country's economy are the very persons who are under most pressure.

“As we all know, women make the biggest contribution to the country's economy. Women who are engaged in the apparel sector, foreign employment, or the estate sector, contribute to more than 52 per cent of the economy.

“At present, women are the ones who are most suppressed. However, women are pressurised when it come to children's education, safety and health.

“The women are severely inconvenienced by the cost of living that is sky rocketing,” said Ms. Atukorala.

“The most affected by war are the widows of war heroes. But the government has not done anything for them. There are no organised steeps being taken to assist the widows and the mothers of those individuals ,” said Ms. Upulangani Malagamuwa.

“Therefore, everyone in our party is committed to strengthen women,” she added.
