Bid to amend constitution to give power to one individual: UNP

(July 06, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The United National Party staged a peaceful protest in the parliament premises today protesting against the proposed amendments to the Constitution and calling for a people-centred Constitution instead of a family-centred Constitution.

The UNP members of parliament took part in the protest holding placards and boards while shouting slogans.

The UNP said that the government, instead of bringing about a programme of work to relieve the millions of people of the unbearable hardships they were facing, were attempting to bring about constitutional changes to concentrate power with one single individual, while doing away with the democratic rights of the general public.

The UNP members pledged that all measures would be taken to enlighten the general public on undemocratic attempts to bring about constitutional changes to do away with the Independent Judiciary, Independent Police Service and an Independent Public Service.
