Sri Lanka Lost the Human Dignity Once Again

EDITORIAL COMMENT Boldby Dr Ruwan M Jayatunge

(August 04, Ontario, Sri Lanka Guardian) The action that was taken by the Deputy Minister of Highways Mervyn Silva - tying the Hunipitiya Samurdhi officer to a mango tree embodies a violation of human rights, demeaning human dignity and exercising state sponsored terror. These types of acts were seen in South Africa during the apartheid regime and Idi Amin ’s Uganda.

Although there were a large numbers people including the Police were present at the scene, no one had courage to point out to the Minister of his awful deed except one woman. But she was silenced with abusive language and threats.

If the Government officer had neglected his duties, the authorities could have conducted an enquiry and then imposed a punishment according to the Establishment Code. Without any civilized or accepted norms, the government officer was punished in a sadistic and savage method and this action would cloud Sri Lanka internationally. Such impulsive actions further ruin the image of Sri Lanka -a Country that has had a dishonorable history of violating human rights.

If these actions prevail in the country and the respective authorities adopt a deaf and blind policy, I am ashamed to be a Sri Lankan.
