Fasting Batticaloa chief monk's condition serious, say monks

(September 29, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Batticaloa viharaya's chief incumbent who is on a fast unto death is in a serious condition requiring immediate medical treatment, monks and residents said.

They said the Ven. Sumanarata Mahanayake Thera had locked himself inside his room in his Mangalaramaya Temple and was not taking any meals or drinks in protest against what he saw as minister Basil Rajpaksa's lack of respect for his demands.

They said no doctor was willing to come to the temple probably for fearing of being politically victimised.
The monk launched his fast unto death two days ago after Mr. Rajapaksa reportedly rejected his demands which the chief monk said was concering about the Sinhala Buddhist people living in the Batticaloa district.
A junior monk told the media that the authorities should take the responsibility if the chief monk's condition turned worse as a result of no medical treatment being given to him.
