Fonseka Trial-at-bar refixed for Oct 4 & 5

(September 28, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The trial-at-bar against former army commander Sarath Fonseka was re-fixed for October 4 and 5th when the case was taken up today with the presence of the ex-army chief.

Mr. Fonseka who is accused disclosing military secrets was brought to courts under a tight security after the Naval Medical officer issued a medical report that he was fit to appear in courts. He did not appear in courts yesterday has he was indisposed.

Court ordered the publisher of the Sunday Leader Lal Wickrematunge and its editor Fredrica Janz to be present in courts on the next day of hearing. The other witnesses said they will be summoned according to the requirements of the courts.

Fonseka was charged in the case after he made a controversial statement to the Sunday Leader newspaper that Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajaapaksa had issued orders not to spare any of the LTTE members who were surrendering during the final stages of the fighting in the north last year.

Mr. Nalin Ladduwahetti, Counsel for Mr. Fonseka informed the bench that through court had directed to hand over a photocopy of the note book used by Janz for the interview with Mr. Fonseka only 30 pages had been handed over. He said there were more than 80 pages in the note book.

The Judges said that there were blank pages in the book, But Ladduwahetti said he wanted to personally check it out and sought permission to meet the Registrar. Permission was granted.

State Counsel Wasantha Nawaratna Bandara informed courts that since there were witnesses from Geneva and New York and early date should be given. Accordingly the case was fixed for the first week of October. Tell a Friend
