Over 60 feared killed in Karyadiyanaru blast -Updated

(September 17, Batticaloa, Sri Lanka Guardian) At least 62 persons mostly policemen were feared killed when a stock of dynamite stored adjoining the police station in Karadiyanaru, Batticaloa went off today afternoon.

Military spokesman Udaya Medawala said that initially a truck carrying dynamite had exploded and it had spread to the stores.

Two Chinese nationals were among those killed. They were employed in a road construction project in the area.

Our reporter said that the injured persons were being transferred to the Batticaloa hospital. "Most of the injured had head injuries", he said.

Police spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody said that the truck was moving out of the stores when an explosion had first gone off inside the truck which triggered off another set off explosions.

DIG for the province Thilak Wijegunawardena who was in Colombo at the time of the incident said that it was an accidental explosion, but a full investigation was underway.

He said the IGP Mahinda Balasuriya, the Government Analyst and CID have flown to the scene of the incident.
