Hush, hush diplomacy to free Rizana

(November 09, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Government is currently involved in ‘ hush, hush’ diplomatic efforts in a bid to seek clemency for the Sri Lankan housemaid Rizana Rafeek who is on death row in Saudi Arabia for the alleged murder of a toddler in her care, a senior External Affairs Ministry official said today.

EA, spokesperson Bandula Jayasekera said the Lankan envoys in Riyadh and also in other countries are in constant touch with the respective governments in those countries in connection with the maid’s case.

The response is encouraging but we cannot go public at this stage since it could damage Rafeek's chances of freedom.

The only person who can pardon the woman, is the ruler of the oil-rich desert kingdom King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Jayasekera added.

The highest courts in Saudi have convicted the housemaid for murder saying she had deliberately smothered the toddler to death.

Rafeek’s defence has denied the charges only to add that the child had suffocated to death during a milk feed. Tell a Friend
