IAC to facilitate the implementation of the Interim Communication of the LLRC, holds its initial session

Statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, Colombo

(November 29, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Inter-Agency Committee to facilitate the implementation of the Interim Communication of the Lessons Learnt & Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), had its initial session under the Chairmanship of Attorney-General Mohan Pieris on 24th November. It would be recalled that the Lessons Learnt & Reconciliation Commission presented to President Mahinda Rajapaksa in September interim recommendations covering several issues. These recommendations were based on a careful consideration of the representations received by the Commission from many quarters.

The Cabinet of Ministers accordingly decided at the end of October, that an Inter-Agency Committee (IAC) be constituted for the purpose of facilitating through practical measures, the implementation of the interim recommendations.

The Committee gave careful consideration to the interim recommendations of the LLRC and decided to request the relevant agencies of the State to take immediate measures to implement the interim recommendations as best as they could and to report to the IAC as to what help (if any), would be necessary to give full meaning to the recommendations. The IAC noted that several measures have already been taken in furtherance of the implementation process. The IAC was also of the view that it work in close consultation with the LLRC and seek the Commission’s directions if deemed necessary.

The Committee decided as well to ensure that those in the North and in the East who have been rendered homeless, should receive due priority in the allotment of housing under the projects assisted respectively by the Government of India and the World Bank.
