(November 09, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Vidarshana is a very beautiful girl from a well to do family. Her elder brother hoped to help her become an educated woman one day. She passed the Advanced Level examination with flying colors. Then she started a love affair with a workman in brother’s business. Her family disapproved, so Vidarshana ran away with this young man.

They lived in Ambilipitya in a small thatched house. Before long she gave birth to their first child but their economic difficulties were severe. Soon, her husband started an affair with a neighborhood woman. He became a drunkard, and every day he beat his wife.

Vidarshana became pregnant for the second time. Her husband forced her to visit her parents and ask for money. Although her elder brother chased her away, Vidarshana’s mother helped her. After she gave birth to her second child Vidarshana found a job in a garment factory in Colombo. Her younger sister also came and stayed in her marital home. But one day Vidarshana caught her husband and sister together in the same bed, seduced by her husband. After that she sent her sister back home and her sister married another person.

Every day her husband treated her badly. She became pregnant for the third time but her husband refused to admit that he was the father of unborn child. He used this opportunity to chase her out of the house.

Vidarshana continued to go to work while staying at a friend’s house. At this house she gave birth to the third child and was forced to act as her own midwife. Out of pain and anger, she threw the infant in the nearby bush. The police found the dead body of the infant and started an investigation. Vidarshana admitted to the Kalubovila hospital because of heavy bleeding.

Vidarshana was arrested and remanded. There was no lawyer to represent her at her arrest or remand hearing. The only visitor who came to see her in remand prison was her mother. Because of the delay in the medical reports, Vidarshana was in the remand prison for several years. After a very prolonged delay, the police finally produced the medical reports. The medical reports revealed that Vidarshana gave birth to a dead infant – she had thrown away a dead infant without knowing it. It took bribing the hospital staff to get the medical reports produced. If not for the bribe, Vidarshana would have stayed in the prison for a considerable time. Finally though, she was acquitted from all the charges.
