Tamil immigration detainees appeal for fair dealing

                                              Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre

(March 26, London, Sri Lanka Guardian) In an appeal sent to Vasugi Solicitors based in East London, Tamil organisations and the Tamil media some of the Tamil immigration detainees held at the Harmondsworth Detention Centre in the outskirts of London has appealed for sympathetic dealing of their asylum applications.

In the two pages appeal letter in Tamil they have detailed their circumstances and the fear of being deported to Sri Lanka.

The appeal stated:

We are writing this letter in the detention centre. So far, they have deported many people. Some of them were forcefully removed handcuffed. At present, we are about 10 living in our wing. Of these, one is not even taking water. He attempted suicide when he was about to be deported earlier. He was kept in the health care with injuries to his neck and then taken to the hospital and brought back afterwards to the wing. As there was no decision made on him, he has started his fast.

Those whom were sent there were handed over to the Sri Lankan Immigration at the airport by the UK Border Agency. They were investigated for 9 to 10 hours and decisions are said to be made after several investigations. Of those, fate of some is not known?

Under these circumstances, if the sent what is the guarantee for our lives? Today, one of our brothers attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself. He would not be living if he prolonged for two more seconds. They have taken him to the hospital now. As the next stage, we do not know who will be doing something next. However, we feel it is better if we die here than there.

In view of this, you have to help us. There is no conducive climate in Sri Lanka for Tamils, in particular young men women are abducted, raped and murdered. Despite knowing all these, the British government is sending us there. With the intention to halt our hunger strike, the officials are trying to separate us and send us to different detention centres.

Whatever happens, we will continue with our protests. Like us, many more youths are kept in other camps.
