Tuition Class Building Burnt

(July 23, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) As the election day progresses there are many disturbing incidents reported from the Northern Peninsula mostly from the Karachchi Pradeshiya Sabha Division. Some of these incidents are listed below:

A tution class building owned by a strong TNA supporter has been burnt down in the Pallai area of Killinochchi District.

Mr. Dharmasiri, the manger of the Watakachchi farm in the Killinochchi District, received death threats from TNA supporters. They arrived in a van bearing number "WP DS - 2841" asked him not to vote at the elections and damaged his vehicle, and damaged his farm property.

In Krishnapuram, Killinochchi District, a group of TNA supporters arrived at Mr. Karunakaran's house and threatened him asking him not to vote at the elections.

CaFFE observed persons in Uniform, distributing free parcels of dry rations to the people of Kalmaduwa in the Sabbhakulam Grama Sewa Area, in the Killinochchi District, forcibly asking the residents to vote for the ruling party, and the collecting of polling cards is also reported.

A group of people collected polling cards of residents in the Kalmaduwa Area, in the Killinochchi District paying them amounts of Rs. 500/= and Rs. 1000/= in exchange for the same.

The updated list of Areas of forceful collection of Voters Cards have taken place are as follows: Watakachchi, Ramanatha Puram, Kalmadu Nagar, Civi Centre, Chalya Puram, Krishna Puram, Bharathi Puram, Konavil, Uriththra Puram, Selva Nagar. Along with areas in the Pachchipallai Pradeshiya Sabha namely: Arasarakanni, Senthil Nagar, Mullaithi, Pallai, Periya Pallai, Thoran Patthu. Persons in Black clothing and some in Army clothing has collected these polling cards last night.

Around 100 supporters of UPFA candidate Chandhu [Candidate No. 13] in the Yatinuwara Pradeshiya Sabha, Kandy Distrct, in a vehicle bearing no. KA - 1816 has been surrounding the polling stations pressurizing voters to vote in favour of him.

A group of masked men, dressed in black arrived at the house of Ms. Parvathi Vernon living at No. 51, Hudson Road, Kaddakachchi in the Killinochchi District, insulted her in filth and asked for her polling card.When she refused to hand it over to them they threatened her with death, and they have done this to all the residents of her village.

A group of masked men dressed in black, arrived at voter Gopala Krishnan's house in Civic Centre, Wattakachchi, and said they will pay him Rs. 1000/= in exchange for his polling card.

The present situation in the Karachchi Pradeshiya Sabha in the Killinochchi District is the worst effected due to malpractices and CaFFE is of the view that the incidents that have been taking place until now can affect the final results.
