UPFA wins local polls

(July 24, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The UPFA won Saturday's local polls recording victories in 45 councils followed by the TNA which captured 18 councils. The TULF won the remaining two councils of the 65 for elections were held.

The UNP and the JVP failed to win any of the councils.

In the Colombo district the UPFA recorded convincing victories by winnng the newly formed Kaduwela MC, Kesbewa-UC and the Homagama PS.

The TNA won 13 of the 16 councils in the Jaffna district with the remaining in the islands off Jaffna going to the UPFA. In the Kilinochchi district the TULF won two councils while the TNA won one. The only council for which polls were held in Mullaitivu was won by the TNA.

The TNA also won the Karativu and Thirukkovil local councils in the Ampara district in addition to winning one councils in the Trincomalee town.

There was an estimated 60 to 65 per cent voter turn out at Saturday's concluded local government elections after a slow start earlier in the day, officials and independent observers said.

According to officials the lowest turn out was reported from the Jaffna District with some 50 per cent.
