UPFA heading for victory in mini-poll

(October 09, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) was heading for a convincing victory in Saturday’s mini polls securing 16 of the 23 local council results announced so far, officials said.

The United National Party (UNP) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) failed to gain a single seat while losing most of the councils with large margins compared to the previous elections.

Of the results announced so far the UPFA had secured the Matara, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Galle, Hambantota, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Matale Badulla Ratnapura , Gampaha and the Suriyawewa, Kundasale and Kandy Gravets and Gangawata Korale Pradeshiya Sabhawas

The UNP lost the Kandy MC for the first time in 58 years while Nuwara Eliya was lost for the first time since 1983

The Colombo, Dehiwala – Mt Lavinia Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, Moratuwa, and Kalmunai MCs, the Kotikawatte-Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabahwa and the Kolonnawa UC results are due to be announced.
