Brexit Deal rejected by Parliament

by our London Correspondent

By a stunning and shattering defeat the Government of Theresa May was defeated in the House of Commons this evening 15 January 2019.

The Ayes to the Right 202 votes, the Noes to the Left 432 votes, MP’s of all sides, shades of opinion voiced their disagreement for the deal brokered with the EU, by Prime Minister Theresa May
during the so called “meaningful vote”, by an all time record margin of 230 votes.

Immediately, Opposition Leader, Jeremy Corbyn tabled a motion of No Confidence. which the Government has agreed will be debated within 24 hours of this catastrophic defeat, tomorrow 16 January 2019.

118 Tory MP’s rebelled against Theresa May in today’s vote.

The Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland has promised it will vote with the Conservative Government in the No Confidence Vote.

What happens next?

The European Union and the British public are both shocked at the size of the majority in the defeat of the Withdrawal Agreement, in Parliament.

The defeat throws the Government and its plans for Brexit into crisis.

All along the view expressed by all parties was “Deal” or “No Deal”.

Unless there is a change of heart, a last minute renegotiation by the EU which is highly unlikely, in view of the majority of the vote, what is already passed in Parliament is the date of Britain leaving the EU on Friday 29 March 2019 at 23.00 hrs GMT.

There is no majority in Parliament for any  deal as seen inside Parliament. Whether a new Government can rescue Britain from leaving the EU is in doubt.

The outcome is established, but the process is uncertain.
