Sri Lankan Naval attack craft waged a three-hour sea battle with 20 Sea Tigers, the Naval Wing of the LTTE boats off the eastern coast of Sri Lanka on Today during midnight , sinking three of the LTTE Boats and killing one of their top Sea Tiger commanders, the military sources said.

The battle, which also killed one navy sailor, came as fighting between the two sides near the LTTE controlled area in north has escalated in recent days, leaving more than 60 LTTE cadres lost, according to the military.

The naval battle began about 11 p.m. Today as 20 boats from the Sea Tigers, headed toward Pulmoddai, SLN intelligence sources told the Lanka Guardian.

The naval craft on patrol intercepted a cluster of approximately 20 LTTE boats which had been launched from Nayaru. They were proceeding towards Pulmudai/Poduwakattu in an apparent attempt to evacuate the LTTE cadres trapped in the Peraru and Kumburuppiddi jungles, according to SLN Intelligence sources.

The Sea Tigers boats were apparently trying to stage a mass evacuation of LTTE fighters who were trapped in nearby jungles after a government offensive earlier this year recaptured the east from the LTTE, the official said.

Naval attack craft cut off the Sea Tiger boats, sparking a lengthy sea battle that led to the sinking of three LTTE Boats, the official said.

The naval personnel successfully engaged the enemy craft and destroyed three of them inflicting heavy damages and casualties to the enemy. Intercepted LTTE communications revealed that the LTTE leader ‘Lieutenant Colonel Nishanthan’ was among those killed, head of the Sri Lanka Navy Intelligence told the Lanka Guardian.
The casualties could not be independently confirmed, but the LTTE said the military was exaggerating their death toll. However, no naval craft received any damages in the confrontation, sources conformed.
