(February 01, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Congress Party on Friday requested the government of Tamilnadu to take stringent action to curb the growing LTTE menace in Tamilnadu.

The request came during the motion of thanks to the Governor’s speech in the Assembly on Friday.

Congress party whip Peter Alphonse said they were opposing LTTE not only because of their direct involvement in the murder of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, but to prevent the spread of terrorism in the State and hence the party wanted the government to take strong measures against the banned outfit.

He further said the State had received various welfare schemes because both the DMK and Congress were in the same alliance. This had led the State on development path, the Congress whip said.

On Ramar Sethu issue, Peter Alphonse said various issues were being raised by communal forces to prevent its implementation. As far as the Congress, the party has respect for Lord Ram and did not want to wound the sentiments of the majority faith.

Even, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has suggested that the canal project be named after Lord Ram. However, it was surprising to see that some communal forces had intervened to thwart the canal project, he said.

The Congress whip also said the communal forces were keen to develop ports in Gujarat and had taken steps to thwart attempts to modernise the port in Tuticorin.

Peter Alphonse also said that all the 39 Parliamentary seats in Tamilnadu should be changed into districts and Assembly seats would have to made into Taluks.
