Tea exports exceed USD One billion

(February 20, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The tea export trade in Sri Lanka has recorded a landmark achievement, exceeding the USD 1 billion in 2007.

The value of tea exports in 2007 recorded 22% increase over the corresponding period of 2006. The value of exports in 2006 was Rs. 91.7 billion and in 2007 was Rs.112 billion. This could be considered as a noteworthy achievement vis-à-vis exports of tea. The value of each kilogram of tea exported, increased by an average of 30%.

The total extent of tea in Sri Lanka is approximately 221,000 hectares in 14 administrative districts. The tea sector has created more than 1.2 million direct and indirect employment.
