(March 6, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Buddha is a universally revered noble philosopher who loved humanity and according to Buddhist literature he had sacrificed his life, limbs and personal pleasures for the cause of finding a way to free mankind from fear and sorrow which is a common feature inherent to all life on earth.
It was Buddha who centuries ago vividly explained on many occasions that the human race is one, and all the nominal racial, religious, caste, political and all other divisional identities adopted are conceptual by nature.
He had said Sabbe Satta Ummattaka meaning that all living beings are mentally deranged in some way or the other, referring in particular to those who lead people to conflict situations resulting in great suffering similar to what is taking place here in Sri Lanka, "Buddha’s Land," and in several other parts of the world where people resort to killing one another.
There were emperors who built great empires killing thousands of people in the name of race, religion etc; or on some other conceptual ideology adopted such as Hitler’s Nazi regime which put six million innocent Jews to death in poisoned gas chambers having gone Ummattaka under an Aryan race concept just a few decades ago in Germany.
In Sri Lanka we have a mixed community carrying five major racial identity labels, four religions and many castes living together. At times some members among them inter-marry the same way Prince Vijaya who arrived here from India married Kuveni, the native Yaksha tribe woman to give birth to the Sinhala race according to legend.
Today inter-marriages are common among members of different communities giving birth to children of mixed parentage. Some parliamentarians who were UNPers prior to election have now adopted a new conceptual label changing their party alliance to fight with their own former colleagues in parliament.
However as at present there is a deadly racial conflict situation that has developed between the so called Sinhala majority and Tamil minority where thousands of young and old have become sacrificial goats, and thousands live as invalids for life minus their limbs.
All citizens especially those who live on a hand to mouth existence suffer tremendously under the crushing cost of living. The economy and development have taken a ‘U’ turn while the rate of crime and anarchy has shot up to unprecedented heights.
Who are the architects of this chain of tragic events taking place since independence in this once blessed land? Are they not the so called ‘great patriots’ who trot the globe all smiles and enjoy life, throwing grand parties to Colombo’s elite with varieties of Western and Eastern dishes at the expense of the suffering masses?
