‘Eastern poll will mark the beginning of the end of the Regfime’

“The Government which has an overriding trait to deride democracy assuming that it has a God given right to capture power even by foul methods cannot be allowed to rig elections and use its tyranny backing undemocratic Parties and activities”

(April 05, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Rauf Hakeem, the Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) who sacrificed his Parliamentary seat to contest the forthcoming Eastern Provincial Council (EPC) polls in alliance with the UNP, said that the EPC polls is important as it is going to mark the beginning of the end of the beleaguered tyrannical Rajapakse Govt. as it is a precursor for many things to come.

If the Govt. is trying to repeat the same undemocratic tactics like in the recent Batticaloa elections, the long and short term consequences would be a reversal of whatever gains made so far, he added

Govt. which has an overriding trait to deride democracy assuming that it has a God given right to capture power even by foul methods cannot be allowed to rig elections and use its tyranny backing undemocratic Parties and activities , he exhorted.

In the meanwhile , the unprecedented electoral alliance between the UNP and SLMC to contest the first ever Eastern Provincial Council elections is seen as also helping to re- build the main Opposition Party `s support base in the East. The SLMC has also agreed for the UNP nomination of Muslims to contest the three Districts in the Eastern Province.
