by Christine Hettiarachchi

(April 17, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Islamic Republic of Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is scheduled to have a two day state visit to Sri Lanka on April 28th, on a special request from the President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

This is the first Asian tour of the Iran President. The national and international political analysts say Ahmadinejad’s selection of Sri Lanka for his first Asian tour is a victory gained by the Sri Lankan President as a political leader in Asia. Proposed grant of financial support had also been appreciated by the political critics.

The arrangements have been made for the laying of the foundation stones by President Ahamedinejad and President Rajapaksa for the Uma Oya hydro power project, on April 29th at Wellawaya.

Iran has come forward to grant the total financial support of US dollars 450 million for this mega multipurpose hydro power project.

Uma Oya project has been variously estimated to produce 100 MW electricity and supply water to irrigate about the agricultural and industrial sectors in Hambantota and Moneragala districts.
