Investigation into 1990 police men massacre

(June 13, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Government has decided to commence an investigation into the massacre by the LTTE in 1990 of 401 unarmed policemen due to an appeal from the affected family members, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said today.

The incident took place after the then Government of President Ranasinghe Premadasa ordered the Policemen serving in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts to lay down arms and surrender to the LTTE but after they surrendered, they were massacred by the LTTE.

The investigation will probe as to who gave the orders for the policemen to lay down arms and surrender.

The MCNS said that family members had recently requested the Defence Secretary, the IGP and the government to investigate and bring justice to the families of the deceased and hence a full investigation is being launched
