Man who triggered Dehiwala blast escapes, 18 injured

(June 04, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) At least 18 persons ( 15 males and 3 females) injured in the explosion that occured on the rail track between Wellawatta and Dehiwala today morning have been admitted to the Kalubowila hospital, Deputy Director Dr. Lionel Muhandiram said.

The explosives had been set to the track and had been set off as the Pandaura - Fort train was passing the location, eyewitnesses said

The steps of the thrid compartment had been damaged, but the train had passed over the damaged track and halted a few meters ahead.

Due to the damage in the track rail services on the southern line has been suspended . However services on the second southern line is likely to resume within the next hour, railway sources said.

Eyewitnesses said that they observed a man who had set off the bomb with a remote control and run away. "It seemded that he had some problem in activating the remote", sources in the area said.

"The man was pretending to be waiting to throw a bag of garbage and got excited and runaway when he saw the people", sources added.

He said that bystanders had followed the man, but made no attempt to catch him fearing that he was a suicide bomber. Later he had got on to a bus and escaped.
