Cannibalism in Sri Lanka

A sad story of human cruelty to extents of cannibalism was seen in Gampaha recently.

(July 05, Gampaha, Sri Lanka Guardian) Thiwanka Rathnayake and Hasanka Ratnayake are twins born in 1997. But they were born at the expense of demise of their mother. However, their father is an officer in Gajaba Regiment, Sri Lanka Army working in training center for Sri Lanka Army. Meanwhile, after their mother died, he brought home a lady from Tamil community.

She was an English teacher at Udugampola Vidyalaya in Gampaha. She originally hails from Katana. Thiwanka and Hasanka went to school at the same school and believed this teacher is their real Mother. This Tamil lady loved these children as her own blood.

The army officer promised her of marriage but this never happened. They were living together. The Army officer clearly neglected this family as internal problems grew within the family. The lady was severely punished for no reason. This man even used his belt to punish this lady. "We heard many times sound of cries the children and his wife at night", according to neighbors.

She tried to go home but her parents refused to take her back. This was due to the fact that she did not want to leave the children of the officer's old marriage. This lady's parents refused to admit these two children to their house.

Meanwhile, the army officer then started to have another relationship with a Muslim lady. The Muslim lady was divorced from her last marriage and was made pregnant by the army officer.

Many problems grew among Muslin mistress, Tamil mistress and the two children of the officer's last marriage.

Meanwhile on the first week of July, this Tami lady went out missing. According to another teacher in the School, she went to take a phone call to the Army officer but they never returned back. Later in the evening, the news was spread that she and her children had committed suicide by jumping into the River of Mathale.

However, there are strong rumours in the town that it was indeed the Army officer who had pushed these humans into the water. Many sources from the village confirmed this.

Sri Lanka Guardian urges the law enforcement officials to launch a immediate investigation on these innocent deaths. The criminals of the innocence must never be left unpunished.

I am surprised why people do not care about such things happenning. May be it did not happen to our family, but such incidents should be investigated properly and punish the criminals who think they can get away.
