Fast an eye wash: Jaya

(July 21, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa today condemned that the State-wide fast observed by the DMK on the rights of Tamil fishermen in Katchatheevu was merely an ‘eye wash’.

In a party release, Jayalalithaa said that Chief Minister Karunanidhi, sensing the protest erupting from various quarters on the frequent killings of Indian fishermen allegedly by the island navy, organised the fast.

That too, the day on which the AIADMK had organised a protest at Nagapattinam in this regard, she added.

Accusing Karunanidhi of passing resolution in the Assembly in 1974 against the Central government’s move in giving Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka only after two months after the agreement between the countries was signed.

Knowning the government’s move in advance why he had not acted immediately, wondered Jayalalithaa. She also said that Karunanidhi, in the resolution passed, had only regretted but not condemned. Now simply organising the fast would mean that he did so as part of his eye-wash political drama, she added.
