Govt. Unleashes State Terror On Its People - S.B.

(August 08, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) UNP M.P. S.B. Dissanayake speaking to the Media today (8 Aug), said, the Rajapakse Govt. which signed agreements at the recent SAARC summit to combat terrorism is unleashing the worst terror on its own people.

Judging by the conduct of its Ministers, its Police Force and its candidates in relation to the forthcoming Sabaragamuwa and North Central province elections, it is very clear that the Govt. which has become so desperate and sure of elections defeat , is not only fomenting lawlessness and a reign of terror ,but has also lost its sense of shame so much so that , just within last two days , the Govt. through its marauders, thugs and hooligans have attacked several UNP election offices , its supporters and candidates , while the Police of the areas were conniving at those crimes .

In some cases the complaints of the UNP victims were not even entertained at the Police stations, while in some others security officers and supporters of the UNP ers were being falsely charged and arrested. It is alleged that UPFA Ministers and its prospective candidates are responsible for this premeditated violence.

UNP M.P.s ,Sajith Premadasa and Thalatha Athukorale were also targetted in this Govt. terrorism .Their van and they were attacked at Thotamulla junction, Ratnapura after they were obstructed by UPFA candidate Janaka Wathkumbara and his thugs. The four security officers of Athukorala who dispersed the attackers were arrested by the Police instead of the attackers,. Similarly,in Anuradhapura , UNP candidate Subashini ‘s office located in the junction where there is a round the clock Police security, was burnt down and office destroyed , allegedly by the UPFA candidate and his henchmen. No arrests have been made so far. These are just two of the many such incidents during just last two days, he lamented.

The Govt. has only just sampled what it is capable of. What monumental crimes, violence and terror tactics it will resort to when elections date gets closer can be gauged from the foregoing, he added.

The Govt. is not implementing the 17th amendment to the constitution because if it does , it cannot appoint its lackeys, stooges and unscrupulous police officers who would back the Govt. to engage in these dastardly activities. If there was the Constitutional council under the 17th amendment (which the Govt. has not appointed), the Govt. will be precluded from making political appointments. At present, most police stations are functioning as UPFA political offices, he regretted.

The Govt. which could not honour a single promise under the Mahinda Chintana : alleviate people’s acute sufferings, carry out a single development program, however has a uniquely deceitful campaign as in the past– they go on a house to house campaign warning the UNP voters that Govt. have won the elections already ,because they have stuffed ballot boxes, and therefore not to go and vote on elections day while also threatening the voters of harassment if they don’t vote for them. Promising jobs to their youths; promising schools for their children are the other ‘gundus’ of the Govt. he asserted.
