Janaka Perera hailed by Govt. as war hero is now called a ‘Tiger’ -UNP

(August 14, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Speaking to the Media today (Aug. 14) UNP M.P. Dayasiri Jayasekera said the Govt. is so bankrupt and desperate that even war heroes like Janaka Perera who won many a hard fought battle against the LTTE, and earlier hailed by the Govt. itself as a celebrated war hero is being maligned as a Tiger supporter because he is contesting in the UNP ticket for the upcoming North central province (NCP) elections.

The Govt. and Ministers are lying so profusely that what they say and do now are forgotten in the next moment. After saying it wont engage in mudslinging; in the same breath its own Minister Rajitha Seneviratne in the most shameless manner casts personal insults on UNP candidates Ranjan and Janaka, he added.

Although the Govt. as always is unleashing the worst violence and lawlessness to win the elections, people themselves have given the right verdicts in some electorates; in one instance ,a Minister was chased away from a Market stall by the people who gathered there. In many of the UPFA rallies , the crowd was so small , the poor organisers of the rallies were severely blamed . One of the organisers in Tantrimalle who could not endure it committed suicide drinking poison, Jayasekera stated .

The Govt. which knows its defeat is a foregone conclusion is trying every act of intimidation , assault and violence using the Police Force who had been instructed not to investigate complaints or take any action against its candidates , supporters and miscreants. Among the many incidents of violence targeting UNP political offices, candidates and supporters, he quoted the following: Ranjan Ramanayake was attacked at Gallewa; S.B. Dissanayake’s convoy traveling for an election rally was blocked; Janaka Perera’s office was smashed up along with so many other UNP offices.

Lawlessness in the country has reached such alarming proportions that a law abiding citizen cannot expect a fair inquiry with the law enforcing authorities. Now, it has come to a point where Magistrates and judges have to warn and instruct the Police to carry out inquiries impartially.

The Govt. is aware that they have no people’s support. Therefore Jayasekera urged the people not to allow the Govt. to steal election victory by pillaging their voting rights by election law violations and using force.
