UNP decides to appoint two Committees



(August 29, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) UNP M.P. Gayantha Karunatileke , addressing a news conference today, (29Aug) the purpose of this meeting was to convey the accurate picture to the public and the Media of the discussions at yesterday’s (28Aug) ,UNP working Committee meeting under the patronage of the Leader of Opposition and UNP , Ranil Wickremesinghe .This meeting was necessitated to dispel the wrong picture the mischief makers in the Govt. are painting and who are trying to fish in troubled waters, he added.

Before explaining in detail, he said the UNP and its Leader firstly expressed their profound gratitude yesterday , to all those who supported and voted for the party at the last two violence and malpractice marred Sabaragamuwa and NCP elections.

Karunatileke said, the UNP appointed two Committees yesterday: a Committee each to go to the electorates and investigate the malpractices and frauds committed in the two electorates as there is mounting information that massive rigging and election frauds have occurred. The investigative reports are to be finalized within two weeks.

The Working Committee also launched a fund to assist the victims of the party who suffered losses through assaults on persons and damage to property by Govt. perpetrators. This fund is to be permanent and are to be used to provide compensation for future election victims too, he exhorted. Just within a matter of two hours of launching , Rs. 35 lakhs was collected for this fund is testament how powerful the party is, and how concerned its supporters are, he exclaimed.

Answering questions raised by the Media regarding leadership changes ,Karunatileke said, it is the Working Committee which has the power to decide on any changes or policies within the party . Therefore , only proposals and views made at the working Committee meeting are valid , and worthy of deliberation ;not, any other made anywhere by anybody to any Media . At yesterday’s meeting, nothing of that sort was aired by anyone, and there was no such need, he emphasized.
