Will the government establish the constitutional council?

- The Sudar Oli Editorial

(August 29, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The government has announced that the results of the North Central and Sabragamuwa Provincial Councils have been a great encouragement to the government’s war efforts.

However, it is not wrong to say that the results are in favour of military operations. Now, the government is confident that it can win all elections with the war propaganda and citing military victories.

But, the UNP, SLMC and CWC are scared to face any elections. Similarly, the members who crossed over to the government side are also disturbed over facing an election for neither their original party nor the new one will accept them. Similarly the para- military groups that work with them, too, will be reluctant to face a general election.

Although this is the situation, the leaders of the parties in the opposition call for elections and they will never dare to face elections. They will never dare to lose the plums of office suddenly.

All parties brought forward 17th amendment to the constitution to ensure good governance, free and fair elections. But the Constitutional Council proposed under the 17th amendment has not been established yet.

All political parties must agitate for the establishment of the Constitutional Council for good governance!
