North–east student’s education!

- Virakesari Editorial

(August 29, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Ministry of Education has taken steps to fill the vacancies that exist for teachers in the national schools in the eastern province.

This is a sound move to solve the problem of the dearth of teachers at schools. There has been a shortage for teachers in most of the schools in the north east and in the upcountry. There is a dearth for teachers of mathematics, science and English, and for higher classes in these schools.

The dearth of teachers is acute in schools in different areas of the north and east. This is a great problem for these students. Most of the schools that were affected by Tsunami and the war still remain closed. As a result, the students are unable to continue their studies. Some are compelled to drop out.

Parents in the north east are perturbed that the education of their children is badly affected by natural disaster, war and the economic crisis.

The education of the students in the north east is badly crippled. It is, therefore, necessary to re-organize these schools and make them function. As a first step, the vacancies for teachers must be filled.

Meanwhile, according to the UNICEF, the education of about 12, 000 students is crippled due to the war. There are a thousand students among the several thousands who were displaced in Mannar, Vavuniya, Killinochichi and Mullaithevu due to the war.

Due to the displacement, schools in those areas have problems in re-opening schools and commencing their education.

The government and the NGOs must do their best to resolve these problems!
