(September 09, Batticaloa, Sri Lanka Guardian) Seelan and Arawaran who are top level supporters of Pillayan, the chief minister of Eastern Province, opened fire on 35-year-old Radhika Thevakumar, a former media coordinator of Pillayan‘s, seriously wounding her Monday around 7:45 p.m., reliable sources close to the TMVP said.

The shooting took place when she went to a pharmacy at Kalladi, police said. The victim, a teacher by profession, was also a journalist who had worked at Sri Lanka's state-owned Thinakaran earlier.

The two assailants came on a motorbike and fired at her. Two bullets struck her abdomen. She has been admitted to the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital. She was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as her condition was critical.

Meanwhile reliable sources in Batticaloa speaking to Sri Lanka Guardian explained, " Radhika met Wasantha who is one of the political coordinators of Basil Rajapaksha’s a few days ago. And she explained to him regarding the real situation in Batticaloa. She had also revealed that the majority of the people in Batticaloa do not like Pillayan. This is probably the reason behind the plot to kill Radhika."

They further stated: "The incident took in one of the most heavily guarded security places with four Special Task Forces sentry points. All vehicle s are checked by the Security every day. Yet the gunmen escaped along the road without any check. It is difficult to believe they did not receive any third party support."

She is married to a Tamil businessman, Thevakumar, in Kalladi. Mrs. Radhika has been on leave for some time from her teaching post, informed sources further added.
