Obama: Pak using US aid to ready for war on India

(September 06, Washington, Sri Lanka Guardian) US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, in a sensational charge, has said Pakistan was misusing the massive American aid it has got to wage the war on terror in order to "prepare for a war against India."

Senator Obama has vowed that, if elected President in November, he would hold Islamabad accountable for the massive military aid it has received from Washington. He said his administration would step up pressure on Pakistan to tackle the terrorist safe havens along its northern border with Afghanistan.

"What we can do is stay focused on Afghanistan and put more pressure on the Pakistanis," he said in an interview to Fox News. He noted the US was providing Pakistan military aid "without having enough strings attached."

"So they’re (Pakistan) using the military aid ... Pakistan ... They’re preparing for a war against India," Mr Obama said.

The campaign to capture Al Qaeda chieftain Osama bin Laden could be pursued, he added, without having to send US ground forces to Pakistan. The Democratic candidate vowed that his administration would not pull out from the war on terror, and would not allow the fundamentalists to take over Pakistan. "What we say is, look, we’re going to provide them with additional military support, targeted at terrorists, and we’re going to help build their democracy ... We’ve wasted $10 billion with (former Pakistan President Pervez) Musha-rraf ... without holding them accountable for knocking out those safe havens," Mr Obama said.

He went on to add: "Nobody has talked about some full-blown invasion of Pakistan... (but) we’ve got to put more pressure on Pakistan to do what they need to do." —PTI
