Steps necessary for controlling road accidents!

– Virakesari Editorial

(September 17, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Road accidents are increasing in many parts of the island. Many drivers fail to follow the traffic rules and road discipline. As a result, people are affected.

Particularly in two different rail incidents, 4 people including women were killed in Ragama and Matale areas recently. Earlier, a railway watcher was on duty at railway crossings. Unfortunately, that practice is not continued. As a result, there are many accidents at railway crossings.

There are many accidents taking place in the country. It is said that the main reason for the road accident is carelessness of the drivers. If the traffic laws are followed, road accidents can be reduced.

In Colombo city, traffic congestion has inceased and road accidents are also increasing even though many traffic police are on duty. To control accidents, the drivers should follow the traffic rules. At the same time, as in foreign countries, traffic monitoring systems can be used. This will reduce the number of road accidents.

As far as Sri Lanka is concerned, it is said that the punishment given to the drivers, who violate the law, is not adequate. As a result they repeat their mistakes.

Therefore, canceling the license of the drivers, who are frequently involved in road accidents, could be a good move. Traffic police should take steps to create awareness among the drivers regarding the road accidents.
