Attack on Jaya: HC directive to TN govt

(October 31, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Madras High Court today directed the State government to submit a detailed report on 5 November over the attack on AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa’s car at Pasumpon village in Ramanathapuram district yesterday.

The incident occurred after she stepped out of her car and entered Muthuramalinga Thevar memorial to pay homage on the occasion of the 46th Guru Puja yesterday.

Miscreants threw stones at her car, while youths sitting atop nearby trees hurled stones at policemen and the AIADMK men following her. A mob beat up some policemen with logs.

The former Chief Minister’s counsel Navaneetha Krishnan appeared before Justice Jayachandran at Madras High Court this morning and filed a petition over the incident.

Navaneetha Krishnan contended that miscreants attacked Jayalalithaa’s convoy. Two of her cars and a Government-owned bullet proof car were damaged.

Urging the court to direct the government to file a report over the attack, Navaneetha Krishnan said, ‘the government had assured adequate protection to Jayalalithaa at the Madras High Court yesterday.

However an attack on her convoy at Pasumpon village exposes the lacunae in her security cover. They have not adhered to their promise’.

Intervening, Government Pleaders Geetha and Selvam urged the court to order the petitioner to file a separate case over the attack and not include it with a case that has been heard already by it.

However Justice Jayachandran turned down the request and said there was no wrong in combining the cases.

Stating that the attack on Jayalalithaa’s convoy was sad, Justice Jayachandran said the State government should file a detailed report on 5 November when the case comes up for hearing.

He also ordered the government to inform the court in a sealed cover on what security cover it has provided for Jayalalithaa.
