Ethnic crisis in Sri Lanka

(October 02, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) TNCC president K V Thangka Balu today said that the ruling UPA government had been taking efforts to protect the rights and livelihood of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Addressing mediapersons here, Thangka Balu said that some political parties had indulged in creating a wrong impression that the Congress and the ruling UPA government were not taking any steps to resolve the ethnic problem in the island nation.

‘ The Congress keeps on protecting the rights of Tamils in Sri Lanka. It is the only party to have lost its leader Rajiv Gandhi for the sake of Lankan Tamils, he said. He also demanded implementation of the Rajiv Gandhi- Jeyawardane accord.

On the recent killings of Indian fishermen by the Lankan Navy, Thangka Balu said that soon identity cards would be provided for Indian fishermen facilitating them to fish in Lanka waters too.’ Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has taken the initiative in this regard, he said.

On a query whether the Indian army backs the Lankan army, he denied it but said all the political parties in India should be united in fighting for the cause of Tamils there.’

The ethnic issue should be taken only as a political and a permanent solution should be found to the issue,’ he said adding, ‘ if a situation arises, I would head the delegation of various political parties to meet Manmohan in this regard.’

When asked if there was a permanent solution to the ethnic problem, he said India is in a position of not interfering with the internal affairs of other countries, but hopes for an amicable solution soon.
