Karuna rewarded for ‘mission one Gunshot’ – Ranjan

(October 20, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Ranjan Ramanayake, Opposition leader of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council said , by the assassination of Major Gen.Perera , the Govt. only confirmed in action the fears Janaka entertained and openly expressed while living that ,if any day he is assassinated , the Govt. and President must be held absolutely responsible The Govt. was fully aware that as an Army Chief who was at the centre of the battlefield commanding the Forces and winning battles, he was always trailed by death risks even after retirement, particularly, because he was forced by the Govt. to mingle. with the terrorists like Karuna Amman, Pillayan and TMVP cadres at the time of his death, who were all with the LTTE earlier , against whom Janaka led his military operations .

This assassination is a clear signal to all Forces and Commanders who are risking their lives in the battlefield that the Govt.’ s recognition of their service is nothing more than a lip service. It is well to remember that this is a Govt. which could not provide the basic security to a celebrated war hero, despite Janaka’s pleas for security .The Govt.’s own intelligence unit also warned that there were death threats to Janaka Perera. He was maneuvered to his death by the Govt. callously and stubbornly denying him the security, not to mention the harassment he was given from the day he contested as a UNP candidate for the NCP elections. He had not only threats from the LTTE, but even from the Karuna, Pillayan and TMVP cadres, the erstwhile LTTE leaders.

A war hero , with an exemplary record of achievements and exceptional abilities who won for the Govt. and the country many victories against the LTTE ; this Govt. even disgraced and committed sacrilege on this soldier and his wife even after death by most uncaringly allowing their corteges to be kept on the wayside for 5 hours at Ratmalana after agreeing to airlift them to Anuradhapura from Ratmalana. At the final hour the Govt. repudiated its promise , and they had to be transported by land route.

If Janaka Perera was provided with a fraction of the security given to Minister Maithripala , he would not have met with this fate. Maithripala escaped in yesterday’s (9 Oct) attempt on his life because of the heavy security given him, he observed.

Analysing the present State tyranny in the country , it is a compelling conclusion that this Govt. is so jittery about the UNP ‘s growing popularity as , both he and Janaka polled the highest number of preferential votes at the last PC elections , that the Govt. is having a diabolic plan to liquidate the popular and top notch UNPers. Dr. John Pulle who died in the same bomb blast also corroborates this, because, as a UNP Manager he was most popular among the people well known for his free medical services and social work. . It is possible that those responsible in his arson and assault case filed by John Pulle against the Police could have made this an occasion to forestall the exposures in Courts of Govt. involvement, Ramanayake alleged.
