Akkarayankulam fall to Sri Lanka Army

(November 06, Kilinochchi, Sri Lanka Guardian) Troops, attached to the Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI), Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) and the Gajaba Regiment (GR) in the 571 Brigade under 57 Division, massing in locations on the western periphery of the KILINOCHCHI district after fighting bitter battles with the Tigers for three consecutive days day and night, finally captured the entire Akkarayankulam built-up territory that houses the Akkarayan Base Hospital with twelve wards, Akkarayan Maha Vidyalaya, Sub Post Office, Nurses’ Quarters, Maternity Home, Teachers’ Quarters, Bazaar buildings and basically everything by Thursday (6) morning the Army Headquarters formally declared.

Loss of this vital area of strategic and tactical importance drives a decisive blow to the terror outfit, since the A-32 Mannar- Pooneryn coastal highway, from this point onwards lies quite straight up to its northern end. The three-day long confrontations inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy, most of who were said to be minors or teenagers, according to ground troops.

On 19th October this year those valiant troops pierced the defensive ditch cum earth bund of the terrorists and overran the enemy positions in the entire western sector fighting striking and ferocious battles.

Tiger terrorists have vandalized all those state and private properties in the town periphery after removing most of the metal structures and other paraphernalia for their terrorist constructions, including medical equipment, wooden school desks and chairs at the time troops, rolled on into the area.

Terrorists also have simultaneously booby trapped almost everything including creepers, trees and small houses awaiting the troops before they desperately withdrew into the jungles at the last minute when the troops were advancing offering stiff resistance. At the time this report was filed, troops were busy doing clearing operations.
