All Party Meeting in TN: Destination Delhi for CM

(November 25, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) An all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi resolved to send two delegations to Delhi to urge Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to pressurise the Lankan government to stop ‘the attacks on Tamils’ in the island nation.

The first delegation comprising Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs from Tamilnadu would meet the Prime Minister on 28 November. The second delegation of all-party leaders led by Karunanidhi himself would hold talks with Manmohan Singh in the capital on 4 December.

Meanwhile, important political parties including the main opposition AIADMK, MDMK, DMDK, CPI and CPI-M boycotted the meet convened by the Chief Minister to discuss the Lankan Tamils issue.

Tamilnadu Congress Committee president K V Thangkabalu too stayed away. However, Congress Legislature Party chief D Sudarsanam and senior leader Yasoda represented the national party, which is one of the main allies of the ruling DMK.

The others who took part include PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss, party president G K Mani, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi chief Thol Thirumavalavan, Indian Union Muslim League leader Khadar Mohideen and Puratchi Bharatham chief Jagan Murthy.

Hours after Karunanidhi made an announcement on the meeting yesterday, AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa and MDMK chief Vaiko announced that they would boycott the meeting, stating that the meeting was yet another eye-wash.

In a statement, Jayalalithaa accused the Chief Minister of failing to protect the Tamils and the meeting was another drama being enacted by him to cheat the Tamils.

‘After the 14 October all-party meeting, Mr Karunanidhi had set a two-week deadline to the Centre to ensure ceasefire, failing to which, all the MPs from the State would resign. But for reasons best known to him, he had dropped the demand and expressed satisfaction with the steps being taken by the Centre,’ Jayalalithaa said.

After Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa called on the Indian Prime Minister and ruled out a ceasefire, the State Assembly had adopted a resolution on 12 November, urging the Centre to prevail upon the Lankan government to immediately declare ceasefire, but nothing happended, she said.

In a separate statement, Vaiko said the Legislature party meeting convened by Karunanidhi was yet another fraud and eye-wash. Holding the Centre responsible for the ongoing military offensive by the Lankan government against the Tamils, he said the DMK government was a party to the atrocities being committed on the Tamils.

Actor Vijayakanth, heading the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) had also said his party would boycott the meeting. He said that Karunanidhi could put an end to the sufferings of Lankan Tamils if he really wanted to do so, as the Centre would certainly pay heed to the ‘pressure’ from the Chief Minister.
