More pressure builds up on TN

(November 07, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Now that the Congress government in Puducherry has said that stringent action would be taken against those who support banned outfits, more pressure is on the ruling DMK in Tamilnadu, whose leader and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had on Thursday said that he was blamed for taking action against those who violated the law by their remarks on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Puducherry Welfare Minister M Kandasamy and Local Administration Minister A Namassivayam said stern action would be taken against those who back banned outfits in the guise of showing solidarity with the Tamils in Lanka.

Namassivayam said there was a calculated attempt on the part of some organisations to disturb the law and order situation in the Union Territory.

Meanwhile, Karunanidhi said in a statement on Thursday that he was blamed for taking action against those who violate the law by their remarks on the issue.

‘A government should think and act responsibly. If action was initiated against those who violated the law by their remarks, I am blamed for acting against the interests of Sri Lankan Tamils.’

Alleging that vested interests were keen to bring down his government, he said, ‘they are continuing with the tactics of acting against the law on the Lankan issue only to embarrass me and my government.’

Karunanidhi thanked All-India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee for taking efforts to consider the grievances of Sri Lankan Tamils considering his request.

However, he thanked those who contributed to the Sri Lankan Relief Fund.

Vaiko Kannappan released from jaill

MDMK leader Vaiko and party presidium chairman Kannappan, arrested on charges of sedition on 23 October, were released on Thursday by a Chennai court following the Tamilnadu government’s submission that investigations into the charges against them were complete and there was no need for further remand.

Accepting a petition filed by the State Additional Public Prosecutor K Ravichandran and a submission by the investigating officer V Kalaian, the VII Metropolitan Magistrate K Ravi released Vaiko and Kannappan and directed them to appear on summons.

In the petition, Ravichandran stated there was no need to extend the remand of Vaiko and Kannappan since the probe had been completed and all documents and evidence had been collected.

The MDMK leaders were brought to court shortly after 2 pm for remand extension. Vaiko also submitted that there was no need to extend the remand further as investigations had been completed.

Vaiko said that when he was arrested in 2002 under POTA he had raised the question whether mere expression of sympathy for terrorist organisations amounted to support of such organisations.

He said his party had expressed its views in support of the suffering Tamils in Sri Lanka, against whom the island nation’s army had allegedly resorted to genocide. He said the supply of arms to the ‘perpetrators of the war against the Tamils in the island amounted to betrayal of the Tamil race.’
